Jazz 91.1 KCSM, the Bay Area’s iconic jazz radio station, has been a cultural cornerstone for over six decades, nurturing a deep appreciation for jazz and fostering a sense of belonging within the community. From its early days as a pioneering radio station to its current role as a leading voice in jazz, KCSM has played a vital role in promoting the rich tradition of jazz music and championing diversity and inclusion.
Celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, KCSM wanted to tell the inspiring story of its history, the enduring power of jazz to connect and inspire, and the station’s continued commitment for preserving jazz music for generations to come. KCSM partnered with Incurrent Media to direct and produce a 60 minute documentary highlighting the station’s legacy and impact on the community.
Given a tight timeline of 6 weeks from project award to delivery, our team diligently planned the development and production, maximizing the most out of a 4-day shoot. Through 18 in-depth interviews with KCSM staff, listeners, supporters and local musicians, Incurrent delved into the station’s vital role in preserving jazz culture and creating a space where people feel connected and uplifted.
Incurrent Media created a documentary that celebrated the station’s unique role in preserving and promoting the rich tradition of jazz and captured the spirit of KCSM’s six decades of broadcasting excellence. To meet the tight deadline for the 60th anniversary celebration, we employed a fast production process. Our team was able to efficiently development, film and conduct post-production in under six weeks to ensure that the documentary was ready for its premiere on time. It serves as an impactful story of the lasting impact the station has had on jazz and the Bay Area community.
