When the Coalition for Healthy Food in Newark Schools came to us, they carried something rare: a mission lived out in the day-to-day actions of students, advocates, and partners who refused to accept that food deserts had to define what ended up on a cafeteria tray. Our task was not simply to document their work. It was to translate the heartbeat of that mission into a story experience that would move audiences, inspire funders, and honor the young people at the center of it all.

What emerged is a story about advocacy, identity, and the power of student voice - from the first moment a student carried something grown in a school garden into the cafeteria, all the way to the systemic influence of Student-Led Nutrition Advisory Councils reshaping policy at scale.
A city reimagining nourishment
Newark is a city where food access is not a given. For generations, systemic barriers have limited the freshness, diversity, and cultural resonance of what students eat at school. The Coalition set out to change that - not from the top down, but from the table up.

The film documents this radical shift: how a cafeteria became a social gathering space centered around fresh produce and empowerment, and how a generation of young leaders successfully advocated for diversity in their food offerings - proving that when students have a seat at the table, they can reshape the future for everyone who follows.
The Coalition's work goes far beyond nutrition. It is a story of civic power - of young people learning that their preferences, their cultures, and their voices belong in institutional spaces that have historically excluded them.
